Creative Worcester
By Kelly Stimson / February 12, 2018

Thanks to the generosity and support of the Barr Foundation, Greater Worcester Community Foundation has joined Creative Commonwealth, a new initiative to strengthen arts and creativity across Massachusetts. This new initiative will help pave the way for five community foundations to engage a new generation of donors with local artists and cultural organizations.

Our initiative, “Creative Worcester,” seeks to propel Worcester’s “cultural renaissance” forward by energizing dynamic cultural institutions, empowering innovative creatives, and engaging with community leaders. In this pilot phase of the initiative, our work will focus specifically on those creative organizations and individuals within the city of Worcester and those that service city residents. This generous grant allows us to provide two granting opportunities: The first is the Creative Community Engagement Grant Program, which arts organizations can apply for to help deepen engagement with our changing and diverse community and strengthen their capacity as communal institutions. The second is the Creative Spark Grant Program, which will support organizations and individuals engaged in the creative sector who have innovative ideas to “spark” new creative expressions from our changing city. We will also partner with community leaders to identify all the ways that arts, culture and creativity can enrich and enliven our City.

This is an exciting time in Worcester’s history, a time of revitalization and growth. With that comes exciting opportunities for everyone to share in how Worcester can be a world-class city. Part of the Barr Foundation’s requirements of the Creative Commonwealth grantees is to raise local funds in support of their own particular initiatives. If you’d like to support the arts in Worcester and haven’t found the right outlet, perhaps having a conversation with us about Creative Worcester might be a good start.
