Mini-grant Program

Mini-grants are one-time grants made to nonprofits in the Greater Worcester Community Foundation service area for non-recurring needs. Awards are limited to $3,000 or $5,000, depending on their purpose as detailed below. Decisions are made and funding released within four to six weeks of application submission. A total pool of $50,000 has been set aside for the 2018 calendar year. 

Areas of Interest

Responsive Innovation – Grant Range: $500 - $5,000. These mini-grants are intended to help organizations experiment with a new idea or respond to changing conditions in the external environment. Funds may be used for:

  • Trial implementation of a new program or service, or adaptation of a proven program from elsewhere.
  • Response to an emerging issue that enables the organization to move its agenda forward.

Organizational Effectiveness – Grant Range: $500 - $5,000. These mini-grants are used to pay for contracted assistance to help organizations fulfill their vision and mission. Priority will be given to prior grantees. Funds may be used to hire a consultant to support:

  • Merger exploration; pursuing the potential or developing a strategic alliance or merger.
  • Executive transition work; facilitating the board’s work in CEO/Executive Director transition.
  • Exploring or implementing a major organizational change.

Equipment/Technology Purchase - Grant Range: $500 - $3,000. These mini-grants are intended to pay for an unplanned or unanticipated equipment or technology purchase that is mission-critical. Funds may be used for:

  • Purchase that is necessary for business continuity, to avoid operational disruption.
  • Purchase intended to meaningfully enhance effectiveness.

Eligibility and Restrictions

    • Applicants must be qualified 501(c)(3) public charities in operation for three or more years and serving cities and towns in Worcester County.
    • Start-ups, public schools, public agencies, municipal departments, and houses of worship are not typically eligible to receive mini-grants.
    • Projects already underway are not eligible. Grants may not be used for expenses already incurred.
    • An organization may receive a maximum of one Mini-grant per calendar year.


No deadline. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. 

Application Forms & Instructions

The application form is online. The first time an organization applies to the Foundation through our online application system, it creates an Organization Account to use for each application going forward. Please use the same account you have previously used, or create a new one if this your first time applying online. You may contact Foundation staff to find out if your organization already has an account in our system.
