2010 Scholarship Guidelines

ONE APPLICATION OPENS THE DOOR

Greater Worcester Community Foundation offers many scholarship awards for local students to attend college. Awards are made through an annual, competitive selection process that takes place from March through June. By completing one application, you may be considered for any of the scholarships for which you are eligible.

TYPES OF STUDENTS AND THE AWARDS WE MAKE

Each of our scholarship funds has special criteria established by our donors. The qualifications of each applicant will be matched accordingly.

Our scholarship awards are mostly limited to residents of the cities and towns within Worcester County, Massachusetts, and are typically for graduating high school seniors to attend college fulltime.

Some awards are also available to older students and returning adults, as indicated by a symbol (*) in the roster of awards.

The amount of money for each award varies, from $250 to $5,000, depending on the size of the fund and the criteria set by the donors. Many of the awards are renewable.

DEADLINE IS MARCH 22, 2010

In order to be considered for an award, your complete application and all required materials must be received at Greater Worcester Community Foundation by 5:00 pm on Monday, March 22, 2010. We will not accept late or incomplete applications. Please read all instructions carefully.

There are two ways to apply:

Complete the application online. Please remember, that in order to complete your online application, you must submit the required supporting materials by the deadline (see below).

Download the guidelines and application form. Please make sure that every part of the application is filled out and you have enclosed all the required supporting materials by the deadline (see below).

REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS

• Official transcript from your most recent high school, college or GED scores
• One-page personal essay describing your academic and career goals, interests and achievements. Essay must be typed.
• Resume listing extra-curricular activities (e.g. student government, music, art, sports, clubs) including community work, volunteer and paid work experience, academic honors, awards or achievements along with years of participation. Resume must be typed.
• Letter of recommendation addressed to Ann T. Lisi and written by an adult (not related to you) who can best describe your abilities and accomplishments. The recommendation should focus on your academics, activities, character and your ability to succeed in college.
• Special Circumstances If there any family or personal circumstances that you feel should be taken into consideration by the Scholarship Committee, please send a separate statement describing the situation.
• Any additional materials required by specific scholarship(s) for which you wish to be considered.

HOW IT WORKS

Every complete application received by the deadline will be given full consideration. Based on the materials submitted, we will evaluate the student’s performance, financial need, and other criteria specified by individual scholarships.

If an interview with a selection committee is required by the fund, any student selected as a finalist will be notified with details about time and location.

All applicants will be notified by June 30. Awards are paid in one installment in early August. All checks are made payable and sent directly to the college.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION ABOUT THE FINANCIAL SECTION

Who should complete the Financial Information section?

If you as the applicant are a “dependent,” then the Financial Information section A must be completed by your parent(s) or the adult(s) who provided your household financial support in 2009.

If you as the applicant are “independent,” then you must provide Financial Information required in section B, regarding you (and your spouse, if married). Please note, you are considered an independent student if

• you were born before January 1, 1987;
• you are an orphan or a ward of the court;
• you have ever served in the military;
• you are married;
• you will be in graduate school in 2010 -2011;
• you have dependents (other than a spouse) that you support;
• you have not been claimed by your parents for two consecutive years and have earned at least $4,000 in each of those years.
