ABOUT FAIRLAWN FOUNDATION

In 1921 members of the Worcester Swedish community established Fairlawn Hospital as a way to serve the growing health needs of the area. Its board of trustees transferred ownership of the hospital in 1991 to a for-profit rehabilitation corporation in response to changes taking place in the healthcare system.

The following year, proceeds from this transaction established the Fairlawn Foundation, an endowed fund administered by Greater Worcester Community Foundation.

Created with a founding gift of $5 million, Fairlawn Foundation is one of the earliest health conversion foundations in Massachusetts. In its first 15 years, it has awarded over $4 million in grants to support capital needs, clinical services, and professional education.

 

AREAS OF INTEREST

Fairlawn Foundation is dedicated to improving health and health care in the Worcester area through grants to nonprofit organizations in our region. Our current areas of interest are:

• health care workforce training
• development of learning facilities, faculty, and scholarships at the college level to advance science and health care professions, with a particular emphasis on nursing
• strategic collaborations and innovations that promote health and wellness for vulnerable citizens

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations as recognized by IRS code 501(c)(3) located in the greater Worcester area.

 

LIMITATIONS

Except in unusual circumstances, Fairlawn Foundation generally will not approve grants:

• To programs that require more than five years to complete
• For projects supported by other funds in which the Fairlawn Foundation contribution would comprise less than 50% of total funding
• For pre-existing projects as a minor participant.

PROCEDURE

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact a Greater Worcester Community Foundation program officer prior to submitting a proposal to discuss the project and determine its appropriateness. Applications are reviewed by Fairlawn Foundation trustees.

 

DEADLINE

March 15 (Spring) and September 15 (Fall)

Note: If a deadline falls on a weekend or public holiday, proposals are due the following business day at 5:00 p.m
