Dennis Rice Receives Renaissance Award

Cash prize honors and thanks nonprofit leaders

Worcester, MA - Greater Worcester Community Foundation presented the fifth annual Renaissance Award to Dennis H. Rice, executive director of Alternatives, a Whitinsville nonprofit supporting people with disabilities residing throughout Central Massachusetts.

Through his leadership spanning nearly three decades, Dennis has improved the quality and responsiveness of programs that currently serve nearly 600 clients. "Dennis has been a visionary leader in creating community for people with disabilities," said Ann Lisi, executive director of the Foundaiton. "He dares to dream big, and he is a competent financial steward of the resources entrusted to his agency."

More recently, Dennis has drawn national attention to the agency through effective collaborations with historical, arts, social service and community development groups, resulting in the restoration of the Whitin Mill. The project incorporates green technology -- geothermal, solar, and water power -- and continues to reap benefits for the agency far beyond its original mission.

The Renaissance Award was established by an anonymous donor to recognize and thank individual people who devote their time and talents to making Worcester a better place, rather than the organizations they serve. This year's award, announced at the 34th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, comes with a $5,229 cash prize from an endowed fund.

The Foundation's executive committee selects a recipient from nominees recommended by the staff and board. Candidates have a demonstrated commitment, for five years or more, to the nonprofit sector, leadership and professional accomplishments, talent in fostering collaborative relationships, and imaginative thinking combined with constructive action.
