Worcester, MA - Greater Worcester Community Foundation announced 2009 year-end results at the 35th Annual Meeting on May 10, 2010 at Mechanics Hall. Total assets were $110,601,721, a 24.6% increase from the year before. Nearly $1.9 million in contributions were received, and $3.8 million was distributed in grants, including more than $507,000 in scholarships, which supported 357 area nonprofit organizations and 316 college students.
"We were able to sustain robust grantmaking even in a year of declining gifts and our investments rebounded well by rebalancing our portfolio,” said
Ann T. Lisi, Foundation President & CEO. “Once again, the community foundation has proved its resilience in a turbulent economy."
Highlights of the year included a second grantmaking round for the GLBT Partnership Fund which distributed $114,500 to six projects fostering a safe and open community; awarding of $1.7 million in grants to the health and human services sector; and the receipt of more than $984,000 through the creation of new funds.
Foundation officers for 2010 were elected at the meeting: R. Joseph Salois, Chair, Warner S. Fletcher, Vice-Chair, Thomas J. Bartholomew, Treasurer, Ellen S. Dunlap, Clerk, Gerald L. (Lee) Gaudette III, Officer at-large and Mary C. Ritter, Officer at-large. An amendment to Foundation Bylaws was also approved to change the executive director's title to President & CEO.
The annual Renaissance Award, recognizing outstanding leadership of a local nonprofit organization, went to Ron Hadorn, executive director of Boys & Girls Club.
Greater Worcester Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a grant maker, a resource for philanthropy and a community builder. It was founded in 1975 by local citizens who envisioned a coordinated endowment as a means to build a vibrant community and to respond to changing conditions. In 34 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $69 million to cultural, service and civic organizations.
