Cash prize honors and thanks nonprofit leaders
Worcester, MA - Greater Worcester Community Foundation presented the sixth annual Renaissance Award to Ron Hadorn, executive director of Boys & Girls Club of Worcester. The award, announced at the Foundation’s 35th Annual Meeting on Monday, May 10, 2010, comes with a $5,103 cash prize from an endowed fund.
Since 2001, Ron has led the 120-year organization -- one of the largest youth development agencies in Central Massachusetts -- through the work of a dedicated staff, strong community collaborations and creative programming that meets the interests and needs of today’s youth.
A collaboration with Main South Community Development Corporation and Clark University resulted in a new clubhouse which opened in 2006 and continues to be a vital force of change in the Main South neighborhood.
"Ron fervently believes that Club members must have a voice and that programming and services should be created with the children’s expressed interests and needs," one nominator wrote. "When the new building was being planned, he asked kids to draw or write how they would like the building to look and what program rooms they wanted; a music room and recording studio they requested were produced.”
Ron has chaired United Way committees and YouthNet, a local collaboration of youth agencies. He was awarded the 2006 Executive of the Year by the Association of Boys & Girls Club Professionals’ Yankee Chapter and the 2004 Distinguished Service Award by the Boys & Girls Club of America New England Commission.
The Renaissance Award was established by an anonymous donor to recognize and thank individual people who devote their time and talents to making Worcester a better place, rather than the organizations they serve. The Foundation's executive committee selects a recipient from nominees recommended by the staff and board. Candidates have a demonstrated commitment, for five years or more, to the nonprofit sector, leadership and professional accomplishments, talent in fostering collaborative relationships, and imaginative thinking combined with constructive action.
