The Foundation announced the 139 awardees of its 2018 Community Grants: a total of $1,747,900. Community Grants support nonprofit organizations that build healthy and vibrant communities throughout Central Massachusetts. Areas of interest this year included Civic Life, the Arts and the Environment; Early Childhood Development; Economic Security; Healthy Communities; Youth Development & Education.
Of the 159 grants awarded, 22 were dedicated solely to projects that focused on early childhood development. Through its Early Childhood Initiative, the Foundation has invested in programs that improve the quality and availability of early childhood education and care, reduce summer learning loss, and support families as primary nurturers and teachers. The initiative aims to ensure that all children in the community gain a sound start during their formative first years.
“We are honored to be a part of a strong and thoughtful network of strategic donors that are committed to making positive change in Greater Worcester. I am especially excited that of the over $1.7M granted, over $400,000 went specifically towards early childhood projects, a Foundation priority,” said Ann T. Lisi, GWCF President and CEO. “Our Community Grant program is the largest funding cycle we have, and annually provides meaningful support towards the better of the community. We look forward to seeing the impact, especially for our community’s children, in the year ahead.”

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation is currently accepting grant applications for their Community Grant program. Community Grants support nonprofit organizations that build healthy and vibrant communities in Central Massachusetts. The Foundation focus on five areas of interest for community grants, which include arts and culture, civic engagement, and environment; early childhood development; youth development and education; economic security; and healthy communities.
“After a year-long “learning tour,” spent exploring issues and speaking with nonprofit leaders we revised our community grant guidelines in early 2016. The changes were made with both continuity and increased effectiveness in mind,” said Ann Lisi, President and CEO at GWCF. “One of the changes was to shift our community grants program from a semiannual to an annual schedule to make more efficient use of staff and volunteer time and to increase the rigor of our grant making by facilitating comparison of proposals.”
Several fundamental values inform GWCF’s grant making: access to opportunity, respect for diversity, and sustainable institutions. With these in mind, we are confident that a healthy and vibrant community can be realized.
Community grants are available for first-time applicants as well as existing and past grantees. Applications must be received by September 15, 2016. For more information, contact Jonathan Cohen, email@example.com or 508-755-0980.
With a total annual discretionary grants budget of approximately $1.6 million, the foundation strives to augment the operating budgets of nonprofits serving the Foundation’s areas of interest including arts and culture, community development, education, the environment, health and human services.
A complete list of Fall 2015 Discretionary grants can be viewed here.
The Foundation is now accepting applications for its Creative Community Engagement Grant Program. The grant program is one element of the Creative Worcester Initiative, which the Foundation has launched in partnership with the Barr Foundation and its Creative Commonwealth Initiative.
With support of five community foundations in five cities across Massachusetts, Creative Commonwealth aims to help engage donors with local artists and cultural organizations in new and transformative ways. Within Creative Worcester, the Creative Community Engagement Grant Program is intended to direct both financial and knowledge resources to Worcester’s non-profit cultural organizations.
These resources are intended to empower non-profits to develop innovative ways to increase engagement with diverse communities that represent Worcester’s changing demographics. Funds may be used for, but are not limited to: operating support, capital needs, audience engagement efforts, or other areas where the organization feels it will improve its ability to engage Worcester’s diverse communities.
To be considered, applicants must be tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations as recognized by IRS code 501(c)(3) serving the Worcester area. Applicants must meet a variety of criteria to ensure project aligns with the Foundation’s vision for community engagement. Organizations chosen to receive Creative Community Engagement grants will also be expected to meet other terms and conditions, including attendance to bi-monthly learning sessions.
Applications must be received online by May 18, 2018. For more information or to RSVP to the orientation, please contact Jonathan Cohen at firstname.lastname@example.org or 508-755-0980 with questions or concerns.
